Futsal History

By: Carlos Mateus,

After reading what has been written about futsal history, I would like to pass along some of the information compiled in my research. Believe me; it will cause some debate on who first played the game, which is getting ready to be an Olympic sport.

Going back in the old days, the game of futsal was played in England, when football was banned by King Edward.
During the England football ban, the game was played indoors, in ballroom facilities, churches hall, were benches were used in the side line to prevent damage to the walls.

The ball was weighted to gain low bounce, preventing it from touching the light fixture hanging from the ceiling. The unlawful indoor game was then called soccer. There were no written rules, but a set of regulation were obeyed by all. After the football players made a fool of the King, playing hidden football, the game was allowed back into Great Britain, but the end result was that the Britons became better football player with the indoor skill acquired during the recession. Scottish, Welsh’s and Irish footballers were not fully affected by the Kings ruling.

In Uruguay,  Juan Carlos Ceriani is known as the creator of the game, and all the Spanish speaking people, believe on that version. Uruguay saw better footballers during the futsal years from 1930 to 1950, when they won two FIFA Football World Cups. When Uruguayans were playing futsal their football players appear to be better than the Brazilians.

The game of futsal started to gain popularity in Brazil after the second-world war. There are too many versions to apply here, but I have interviewed some futsal old timer, and putting together their recollections I came to the conclusion, that the game of futsal has been developed and mastered by Brazilian player’s coaches, spectators, sports administrators and the media.

The sport of futsal is gaining world popularity, unfortunately there is something struggling in the administration of the game which saw a division between world governing bodies.

FIFUSA- Federacion International de Futebol de Salao was founded in South America in the late 1970’s, with headquarter in Brazil, Joao Havelange, was the first president, projecting himself in the world football stage. Havelange became the president of the Brazilian Football Association, leading to twenty four years as FIFA president.

In 1982 Brazil hosted the first futsal world Cup under FIFUSA umbrella, with Brazil and Paraguay meeting in the finals, one goal from a dead ball situation gave the Brazilian the championships and the first world title.
Paraguayans put on a good performance, in a very exciting match. The international sport media was  present, and reported on the best game of futsal played to this date.

In 1985, Spain came into the fold, and hosted the second FIFUSA World Cup; sixteen nations received invitations to participate, and had to pay their own expenses to play. Canadian players received a letter from the Canadian Soccer Association, containing intimidating words, threaten to expel the players from their football clubs, for participating in a non sanctioned FIFA Championship. The same fashion as they did in the previous year, when a Canadian team participated in the Pan America Futsal Cup held in Brazil, in 1984.

In 1988, I atended my last FIFUSA annual general meeting, on the agenda of the late President Januario DÁllesio, was an invitation to all Futsal Federation presents, to leave FIFUSA and become members of FIFA.
During the futsal  conference, Brazil was lobbying for FIFA and  said yes to becoming a FIFA member, Australia, US, Japan, Czechoslovak Costa Rica  and Canada, were the other six associations to fall into the fold, and eventually saw their futsal associations being swallowed by FIFA affiliated soccer associations in their countries.
Volunteer people involved in futsal clubs, leagues, provincial or state associations were left out in the cold with no say in the future of the game. Brazil CBFS continued an independent futsal governing body

It has been twenty years since that movement took place. Brazil is the only Futsal Federation that remains governing its own affairs, independent from outdoor soccer / Football, and has had two presidents since,  Aecio Borba de Vasconcelos, have been at the helm since the existence of CBFS. He coched the first Brazilian  National Futsal Team, and won the first International game in Paraguay.  Brazil was the the event Champion winning the final game against Paraguay in Assuncion, in 1968.
Aecio Borba and Carlos Bittencourt - o Carlinhos , were the two Brazilians futsal administrators, that put futsal into Fifa, the rest went in for the ride.

Rolando Alarcon, a Lawyer, and President of Paraguay Futsal Association, has kept FIFUSA Futsal alive under the new name of Association Mundial de Futsal (AMF), or World Futsal Association (WFA),
