Most of these girls are now university grads, perhaps coaching futsal from what they have learned from the great Canadian futsal Mind Leo Beier...Who, I had the pleasure to work together promoting futsal in Canada- right from day one started in 1980 at the old Malaspina College gym bubble that blew over a snow storm ...
. Carlos Mateus- back living in Brazil , but keeping in touch with the futsal news in Nanaimo and Canada,
" I would like to thank you Leo and Deryck Cowling , for carry on the futsal dream in Nanaimo".
Also the Futsal Canada Blog would like to take the opportunity to recommend Leo Beier for the nominees, to be included in the Nanaimo Hall of the Fame in 2011. I can not think of anyone that has produced 3 Canadian winning team in Nanaimo. If you read the Canadian futsal history , you will agree with me , that Leo Beier was the man behind the scene to bring futsal to Canada.
Without Government funds, we produced three Canadians Futsal Winning Teams that represented Canada in International sporting events in the City of Nanaimo, winners of the First North American Futsal Cup beating the USA Man's National Futsal team by 9 to 3, in the final game , at the Nanaimo Civic Arena , summer 1984.... The First Canadian Women Futsal Team won the three games series , playing against the Australian National Futsal Team - recognized and funded by the Aussie Sports . The Canadian winning team coached by Ike Mackay, was formed with players most from the Leo Beier Tiger's Futsal and soccer team of the Vancouver island.
Leo helped organize and coached players that were on the Canadian Futsal Aboriginal Team, that won the first ever Native futsal or soccer cup, played between Canadian first Nations People versus Australian Aboriginal Futsal Team. Chief Jerry Brown of Nanaimo Indian Band, Alex Stewart- former city Ladysmith,- Mayor , Jim Kipp was at the Shaw Cable Television doing volunteer work as sports spokesman , Les Malbon Phys ed Professor VIU, Newsman Al Cameron , Phil Holf and many Nanaimo people would agree that Leo Beier , Born and raised in Nanaimo , deserves in Life , some kind award from the city that he has served with pride, and still does .
Why not have Leo Beier picture at the new wall of the fame for sports minds? ...... At the Oliver Woods Gym, you will find Leo Beier Coaching futsal . .......
Leo was the Nanaimo and District Youth Soccer Association President, coached women soccer team from lower division-on to premier League Champions. Representing Nanaimo blue collar workers, determination and commitment in sports, as well as coaching women soccer and futsal for the past 30 year.
